The hiking and trekking specialist !
A hands on job, the mountain leader (AEM) works at low to middle altitudes but not on rock, glaciers, canyons or difficult terrain requiring the use of mountaineering techniques.
Mountain leaders organise hiking and trekking at the request of clients taking into account their expectations and experience.
They are responsible for their client’s safety and they must be abe to orientate themselves at all times. The AEM does not simply organise and lead hikes, they must also be able to share their knowledge of the mountain environment, fauna and flora, and also lifestyles, activities, local traditions etc ...
There are now some 9 000 mountain leaders in France, 85% are self-employed. The AEM must know how to market themelves, to be original and offer imaginative products. The AEM can, for example, propose themed walks, very popular nowadays: cultural heritage, gastronomy or wine tours, walks with snowshoes or mountain biking (mountain biking requires an additional qualification).
Being a mountain leader can now be a bi-seasonal activity, winter and summer, and sometimes even autumn, but it remains for many a seasonal job.
To be able to work, it is imperative to have the National Mountain Leader Diploma, a diploma issued by the DDJS.VIEW COURSE
